When the Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) led by Kejriwal first came into the limelight, I never took them too seriously. Saying that let me clarify that I am quite apolitical and the closest I get to talking politics is on the phone with my dad (who by the way is quite the lay politician) or husband a few times every week. We lightly discuss and laugh about the political news trending that day, vent our anguish at the theatrics of some idiot politician or the other and that's enough politics for me.
And then the AAP did surprisingly well in the Delhi elections and I began to take more notice. What if there really was something about this bunch of people? What if their ideologies which were refreshingly pure could be made reality? What if their spirit spread, allowing India to face their toughest demon, namely corruption? Though I thought their caps made a really bad fashion statement I began to like them and pay them more notice.
Well they managed to form the government in Delhi but sadly in a few days, in many little ways they began to show their inexperience and immaturity. As I write this, a two day dharna (protest) by the honorable chief minster has just come to an end. It was embarrassing to see Chief minister Kejriwal take to the streets to and use bullish methods to get what he wanted. The reason for the dharna seems irrelevant now. The fact of the matter is that Kejriwal may think he won the battle but the war...well only time will tell. In my opinion no one really won, least of all the aam aadmi. And as for their credibility... well there are a whole bunch of us ' AAP might be's' sighing and laughing at ourselves for almost believing in a dream. And probably a bigger bunch of real AAP supporters questioning their allegiances, distancing themselves from the party and feeling let down.
Yes its sad....the AAP really could have been the change India so desperately needs. Perhaps it still will, but not before the party commits to a more professional modus operandi and plays by the same rules it demands of others. They key lies in being visionary, looking ahead and leading by example. The country so bogged down with the weight of a hopeless tomorrow needs to be able to put their faith in a party that can prove its integrity and commit to making India a country free from poverty, biases, corruption and inequality. All we really need is hope. In the two years I have been here I am amazed to see so many different people from different walks of life go on and make a difference to their communities. Unfortunately for every step they take us forward there are ten ignoramus goons pulling us back. But the masses are restless. They have begun beating their drums and as the tempo gets louder the politicians will have to take heed and keep the rhythm. Not tomorrow, but soon.....Hope India hope.
